Very Grand Design in Hemingford Abbotts

Design challenges aplenty for Apex in this nearly 10,000 sq ft unique new build with river frontage in the sought after village of Hemingford Abbotts.

We were invited to design and manufacture the roof timbers for this large concept home by Direct 2 Site, who were supplying Peters Developments Ltd.

Design challenges included:

  • Varying ceiling and wall plate heights and a two story central galleried atrium stretching from the ground floor to the roof of the property, complete with roof lantern, had to be incorporated in the design.
  • Detailed plans for the fall to the flat roof for rainwater management were also key.
  • Precision was critical to make sure the roof finished level to the quoins to ensure the fascia fitted.
  • To address the sheer scale of the raised ceilings, our design team worked to reduce truss centres and added timber scabs.
  • We added horizontal cuts instead of bird’s mouth cuts to ease site installation.

With such a large and complex design and build, Director Mat Harbour made plenty of site visits to liaise with builders and carpenters. “Our relationship with the on site team made it possible to plan to spread deliveries in sections to work around site access issues for this major project and to supply roof sections and trusses in the order they were required to keep the build programme on track.”
